INFORMATION & ADVICE

Z20C13 stainless steel perfect for springs and many other applications

The X20cr13 is a martensitic stainless steel with a composition very close to the X46Cr13. Commonly known as Z20 in France, stainless steel has many applications. In industry, it is used to produce blades that do not require large hardness but a very good corrosion resistance. Example: Household chopper blade.

Its very low carbon does not allow it to rise very high in hardness, on the other hand it hardly rusts.

X20Cr13, steel for folding knife springs

This low carbon has another advantage: your parts will retain some flexibility after soaking. Therefore, the Z20C13 stainless steel is used by cutlery as a steel for springs in the manufacture of folding knives. This is valid for a forced butt like a liner block.

Z20C13 can be used without quenching depending on the application:

To obtain all these mechanical and anti-corrosion characteristics, the X20Cr13 or 1.4021 must be tempered and tempered. However, some cutlery use this material in a low thickness in the annealed state to make their plates. Very low carbon does not cause corrosion even if it is not soaked.
